FATE 2025 BIENNIAL CONFERENCE

April 10 – 12 at the Hilton Tysons Corner
McLean, Virginia

FATE is an educational association dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the development and teaching of college-level foundation courses in both studio and art history. The organization’s reach extends throughout art and design programs in independent colleges, university departments, community colleges, and crossover, undergraduate-level high school opportunities throughout the United States & Canada and is represented at most major higher education conferences to promote the goals of the organization.

On Thursday, April 10, I joined Dr. Elissa Graff, Dean of Faculty and Chair of General Education at the Kentucky College of Art + Design, during a session entitled Which Came First? Creativity or Craft? During this session, I made the presentation, Creativity, Craft, and Context: Foundations 110 Line + Space — A Case Study, with the following abstract:

What foundational skills do our students need to succeed in a subject-led curriculum? How do Creative Problem Solving, Project Planning, and Material Experimentation play a role?

Based upon these platforms, we asked ourselves: What foundational skills do our students need to succeed in a subject-led curriculum? Our focus became: creative problem solving, project planning, and material experimentation. And then, we set about establishing a foundation course series for all first-year students to engage in. We had the desire to create a program that leveled technical capabilities among cohorts while simultaneously demonstrating ways students could experiment and generate creative ideas.
